Transformer Bushing Installation and Maintenance Best Practices
2026-08-13
Bushing service life depends not only on manufacturing quality but also on correct installation and maintenance. Many avoidable failures originate from negligence during transport, lifting or installation.
1. Storage and transport
- Store bushings vertically to avoid core displacement from long horizontal storage.
- Keep the storage environment dry and free of corrosive gases.
- Secure the bushing firmly during transport to avoid impact and severe vibration of the porcelain.
2. Lifting
- Use dedicated lifting tools — never lift directly on the porcelain or sheds.
- Follow the manufacturer's lifting angle and operate slowly and smoothly.
3. Installation
- Before installation, inspect for cracks in the porcelain and deformation of the flange.
- Tighten flange bolts evenly to the specified torque.
- Install gaskets correctly to ensure a good seal.
- For OIP bushings, fill oil per specification and check the oil level after installation.
4. Commissioning tests
- Tan delta and capacitance tests, compared with factory values.
- Insulation resistance test.
- Check oil level, seals and grounding.
5. Periodic maintenance
- Visual inspection: oil level, leaks, porcelain cracks, shed contamination.
- Infrared thermography: find overheated connections.
- Tan delta / capacitance: track insulation condition trends.
- DGA: analyse dissolved gases in oil to find early defects.
- Cleaning: clean regularly or apply anti-pollution coatings in polluted areas.
6. Keep records
Create a file for each bushing recording factory data, historical test results and maintenance records, forming a complete trend analysis for condition-based maintenance.
Following these best practices significantly extends bushing life and reduces unplanned outages. For specific installation guidance or a maintenance plan, contact the Ever Power technical support team.
